Description

Bake On is a collection of screen printed baking tea towels designed by Chris Gojal Krogsgaard which feature step-by-step recipes of either cakes, cookies, cupcakes, frostings and muffins. They are kids-friendly, colourful, intuitive, easy-to-use, multi-functional and they look great in the kitchen.

History

Early history

The idea of Bake On came from an assignment Chris picked while studying Graphics at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, in London, in 2011. The brief asked her to redesign a recipe keeping the user in mind. After baking the same recipe several times over, Chris realised just how frustrated she kept being over having to take her computer with her to the kitchen or getting the printed recipe grease-stained, making it undecipherable. She needed to find a better solution and that is where the idea of having her recipe on a tea towel came from. That way, she would not feel bad about getting it dirty and it could sustain stains without compromising legibility. She also would not have to squint to read the fine print on her computer or have to worry about how to press the down arrow with dirty hands so she could read the following steps and, on top of that, she could use her recipe for more than just baking.

Iteration, iteration, iteration

It started with A4 sheets of paper taped together, then a badly transferred version on some leftover piece of fabric, then test after test with different printing methods and fabrics. It took countless iterations, both with design and printing methods and even more emails to screen printers all over Europe, the US and New Zealand. Two sets of samples have been printed, one in NZ and another in UK. The latter one is the current iteration and the best one to date. The towels are made from purely from 10oz high quality cotton and weigh approximately 235gsm per square meter. They are hemmed on all four sides and measure about 78cms x 48cms (38.7in x 18.9in), and they are screen printed with highly sustainable, water based inks, making them long lasting and non-toxic.

Crowdfunding and the future

Three of the tea towels were selected for initial production and they have been sold both online and offline since May 2014. Now the entire collection is designed and ready for production but sadly setting that up costs a lot of funds. Chris has already thrown everything she owns into pre-production and a crowdfunding campaign to help raise the necessary funds. The campaign will allow her to produce 50 towels of each one of her initial 10 recipes, adding up to a total of 500 towels. It will also help cover initial one-off costs such as the screens required for the printing process. Chris has been working on Bake On for 3 years and it was obvious from the very beginning that Kickstarter was the right platform to help launch the collection. It gives her a chance to properly explain the project, and see how the Internet reacts to it. It also allows her to get new ideas and suggestions for new designs.
